Marrakech to Merzouga: 5 Ways, 1 Honest Place to Break It

Last verified: September 28, 2026. On 27 and 28 September I ran the road from Marrakech to Merzouga through two public routing engines, read Supratours’ own timetable and booking pages for the stops on the corridor, pulled two months of Ryanair fares to Errachidia, and worked out sunset at Merzouga for every month. I re-check all of it every 60 days and move the date each time.

Marrakech to Merzouga is about 560 kilometres of road, and nobody agrees how long it takes. Six published pages I read put the non-stop drive at anything from 8 hours to 10 hours 27 minutes. The only timetable on the road says 12 hours 30, and that coach reaches the dunes after sunset in every month of the year.

Marrakech to Merzouga, 5 ways and 1 honest place to break it: 560 km and 10 to 12 hours of routed driving before a single stop

Disclosure: Some links in this guide may earn us a commission, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend.

So I measured it. Below is the road leg by leg, five ways to cover it, and the one place I’d sleep on the way.

Key Takeaways

  • Marrakech to Merzouga is about 560 km, and it isn’t an eight-hour drive. Two routing engines put it at 10.1 to 11.7 hours with no stops at all
  • The one direct coach takes 12h30 and arrives at 20:30, after sunset in every month. Its return leaves Merzouga at 07:30
  • Break the journey in the Dades valley. Boumalne sits just past halfway, and day two reaches the dunes in daylight
  • Flying to Errachidia cuts the road to 124 km, but Ryanair’s fare finder showed flights on only 22 of 61 days in October and November
  • Don’t drive the High Atlas at night. Canada’s travel advice says to avoid night driving outright

How far is Marrakech to Merzouga, and how long does it take?

Marrakech to Merzouga is about 560 km by road, and 10 to 12 hours of routed driving before you stop once. On 27 September 2026 the OSRM routing engine gave 556.7 km and 10.1 hours from Jemaa el-Fna to Merzouga village, and Valhalla gave 560.1 km and 11.7 hours. The daily Supratours coach takes 12 hours 30.

The distance is barely in dispute. The pages I read put it between 534 and 560 km, and both engines land within 1% of 560. The time is where it goes wrong. The shortest figure I found, 8 hours, is two hours under the faster engine, and I printed “eight to nine hours” on this site myself until I checked.

Why do published times differ so much? Mostly because nobody says what they measured. Some count only wheels turning, one says “without long stops”, and one says the answer depends on the route. The fastest line follows the N10 through Tinghir and Tinejdad. Going round by Errachidia instead adds about 70 km and an hour, and that’s the road the coach takes.

Every row is a no-stops figure except the timetable, which includes its stops. Published ranges are what each page prints; the two routing engines are my own runs.

Both engines are models run on OpenStreetMap data, not a stopwatch, and a real day adds fuel, photos, police checks and slow lorries on the pass. Treat 10 hours as a floor. Can you do it in one day? Yes. The coach arrives after sunset every time, and a car needs an early start and few stops to beat it. As a day trip there and back, no: that’s more than 1,100 km. This is why the shortest sensible desert tour is three days, not two.

Which road does it take? The route, stop by stop

The road crosses the High Atlas on the N9 to Ouarzazate. It then runs east on the N10 through the Dades valley to Tinghir and Tinejdad, and on the R702 to Erfoud before the last stretch south to the dunes. Marrakech to Ouarzazate alone is 194 to 200 km and about 3 hours 45 of routed driving.

Routed town to town, the four legs add up to 554 km and 10 hours 14. The single through route is 557 km and 10 hours 08. The gap comes from forcing each town centre as a waypoint.

The first 100 km are the hard part. The N9 climbs from Marrakech to Tizi n’Tichka at about 2,205 metres, the figure a GPS survey gave; the sign at the top still says 2,260 (Wikipedia, Tizi n’Tichka). Expect hairpins, roadworks and lorries in low gear. Then it drops to Ouarzazate, and the road east through Skoura, Kelaa M’Gouna and the Dades valley is flatter and faster.

Three turn-offs cost time. Aït Benhaddou sits just off the N9 before Ouarzazate. The Dades gorge road climbs about 25 km north of Boumalne, around an hour and a quarter there and back. The Todra gorge is just north of Tinghir. After Tinejdad the country empties, and Erfoud is the last real town before the dunes.

After Tinejdad the coach takes the long road Kilometres from Marrakech against hours. Car: routed, no stops (OSRM). Kilometres covered against hours from Marrakech. The car line is a routed model with no stops; the coach line is Supratours’ published timetable, on its own road via Errachidia.

The coach timetable shows where the time goes. It keeps within about 45 minutes of a car as far as Tinghir. Then it takes five more hours, because it goes the long way round by Errachidia, about 270 km, stopping in every town.

Should you break the journey, and where?

Yes, and in the Dades valley. Boumalne Dadès is about 307 of the 554 routed km, and 5 hours 43 of 10 hours 14, just past halfway by distance and time. Sleep there and day two is about 4 hours 30 of routed driving, just under 6 on the slower engine, so you reach Merzouga with daylight to spare.

I looked at the four places people usually sleep. Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate are only about a third of the way. They make day one easy and leave you a second day of 6 hours 30 or more, most of it east of Tinghir, where the two engines disagree most. Tinghir, beside the Todra gorge, is the opposite: a long first day and the shortest second one, at about 3 hours 30.

Why does the second day matter more? Because of the sunset. At Merzouga the sun sets at about 17:44 in mid-October and 17:15 in mid-December (my calculation from NOAA’s solar equations). Leave Boumalne at 10:00 and even the slower engine has you there by about 16:00, before any stops. That leaves time for the camel leg at dusk, which is the reason most people come. For which month to go, see the best time to visit Morocco.

Dades is the only night that splits the road in two Routed driving hours on each day, no stops (OSRM). Where you sleep decides which day is the long one. 0h 2h 4h 6h 8h 10h Aït Benhaddou 3h19, 170 km 7h08, 394 km Ouarzazate 3h43, 194 km 6h32, 359 km Dades, at Boumalne 5h43, 307 km 4h31, 247 km Todra, at Tinghir 6h46, 359 km 3h29, 195 km Day one, from Marrakech Day two, to Merzouga Valhalla routes every day-two leg about 1h20 to 1h40 longer. Routed driving hours for each day if you sleep once on the way. Your stops come on top of both days.

Tours already make this choice for you. Most three-day itineraries sleep in the Dades or Todra valley on night one. If you’re driving yourself, the Dades valley gives you two days of similar length. Todra is the better choice if you’d rather do the long day first.

On the coach, a break buys rest, not light. The same N3100 passes Tinghir at 15:30 on the dates I read and still reaches Merzouga at 20:30. Stop overnight on the way and you arrive in the dark a day later.

Can you take a bus from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Yes, one direct Supratours coach a day, but its booking page didn’t offer it as one ticket when I checked. The timetable lists the 08:00 departure arriving at 20:30. For 6 October 2026 the booking page showed no direct trip and offered only a train and night coach via Meknes: 15 hours 25, from 450 dirhams.

I read both halves of Supratours’ own site for the same day. The timetable page shows MARRAKECH 08h00, MERZOUGA 20h30. The booking page for that date listed one option, leaving at 14h35 and arriving at 06h00 next morning, and its “direct trip” filter said: “Aucun trajet direct n’est disponible”, no direct trip available. Its booking system returned the same single connection on every date I tried with trains on sale, from 29 September to 10 November.

Stopping short of the end works. On the same 08:00 coach, the booking page offered Marrakech to Tinejdad at 200 dirhams and Tinejdad to Merzouga at 110. Two tickets on one coach come to 310 dirhams, and the return, Merzouga 07:30 to Marrakech 20:00, is offered direct at 300.

These are Flex fares for one adult in second class, read on 27 September 2026. I didn’t buy a ticket or ask an agency, so I can’t tell you whether an agency sells the through seat, or whether you keep the same seat at Tinejdad. Supratours’ Flex fares are refundable to 24 hours out, which the CTM vs Supratours comparison covers with the rest of the ticket rules.

The 20:30 coach never beats the sunset Sunset at Merzouga on the 15th of each month, against the daily coach’s 20:30 arrival. 17:00 17:30 18:00 18:30 19:00 19:30 20:00 20:30 21:00 17:44 Oct 17:18 Nov 17:15 Dec 17:36 Jan 18:03 Feb 18:24 Mar 18:44 Apr 19:04 May 19:21 Jun 19:21 Jul 18:59 Aug 18:22 Sep Coach arrives 20:30 Clock time GMT, which Morocco keeps all year from 20 September 2026. Sunset on the 15th of each month at Merzouga, Moroccan clock time (GMT). The daily coach arrives after it in every month.

Whatever you buy, you arrive at 20:30, and the latest sunset of the year at Merzouga is about 19:21 in June and July, more than an hour earlier. Those are GMT clock times: Morocco left GMT+1 for good on 20 September 2026, as Hespress reported from the decree, so an older sunset table reads an hour late. Arrange the camp pickup for after dark. CTM, the other big coach company, lists Rissani, Erfoud and Tinghir on its network but not Merzouga. From Rissani the last stretch, about 40 km, is on the same N3100 at 40 dirhams, or a grand taxi I found no published fare for.

Can you fly from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Not to Merzouga itself, but to Errachidia, 124 km and about 2 hours 10 of routed driving north of the dunes. On 27 September, Ryanair’s fare finder showed one-hour Marrakech to Errachidia flights on 22 of the 61 days in October and November 2026. Base fares ran from 178 to 711 dirhams, with a median of 249.

That’s the fastest way to the desert by a distance. The fares I saw were for Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Twelve of the 22 listed flights depart between 13:10 and 13:20, and nine after 20:00. A 13:15 departure lands at 14:15, which puts you at Merzouga by late afternoon. An evening flight doesn’t, and you’d sleep in Errachidia.

Those are base fares from Ryanair’s own fare finder, before bags and seats, and they move daily. The gap is the ground link. I found no scheduled bus from the airport to Merzouga, so the last 124 km means a transfer your camp arranges or a hire car. Supratours’ timetable does list Errachidia town at 17:59 and Merzouga at 20:30, though I didn’t read a fare for that leg. Flying suits anyone ending the trip in the desert or refusing a ten-hour day, and the way back still needs a plan.

Tour, private driver or your own car: the five ways compared

A shared three-day tour is the default, and it makes the break for you. A private driver drives the same road but stops where you ask. Your own car is the only way to choose the night and the pace yourself, at 10 to 12 hours of routed driving before stops.

Here are the five ways side by side, with no tour prices, because those change by operator and group size. What a desert tour actually costs is a separate round with its own median.

Going on to Fes rather than back is often the better trip. Merzouga to Fes is about 464 km and 8.2 routed hours, and it’s how the 10-day itinerary avoids driving the same road twice. If you’re weighing Merzouga against the closer dunes, Zagora is 349 km and about 6.7 routed hours from Marrakech, and Merzouga vs Zagora covers what that saving buys.

Driving yourself is realistic on this road by day. What the car costs, and the insurance trap in the small print, are in renting a car in Morocco.

Is the Marrakech to Merzouga road safe?

By day and with care, yes. At night, no. Canada’s travel advice for Morocco, updated 24 September 2026, says to “avoid driving at night”. The UK’s warns that poor lighting makes night driving dangerous, and that mountain roads can be especially hazardous in bad weather.

The UK’s wording is in the FCDO’s safety advice, and Canada’s in its Morocco page. Canada also puts the rainy season at November to March, when flash floods can occur frequently. The pass closures below fall in the same months.

Tichka does close. On 16 December 2025 heavy snow stopped all traffic on the N9 at the pass (Telquel). On 20 January 2026 it reopened after a closure caused by snow and rockfalls (H24info). In winter, keep a spare day and check the pass before you leave.

Nationally, Morocco recorded 4,577 road deaths in 2025 (NARSA, provisional figures). What that means for a visitor is the subject of is Morocco safe. The rule this road needs is simpler: plan the day so the Tichka climb and the last stretch after Erfoud are both in daylight.

Will a tunnel make it shorter?

Not soon. The tunnel under study is the Ourika tunnel, about 10 km long, not a tunnel under Tichka. It would save about 80 minutes for cars and cost about 10 billion dirhams. In January 2026 the Equipment minister told parliament that no timeline can be set until geological studies are done.

The minister, Nizar Baraka, said two successive study tenders had failed to produce usable geological results, and the contract to the LPEE-Drillon TR consortium was cancelled (Morocco World News, 14 January 2026). The plan includes about 80 km of access roads and 10 bridges.

For a trip this year or next, the road is the one in the table above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours is Marrakech to Merzouga by car?

About 10 to 12 hours of routed driving before any stop. Two routing engines gave 10.1 and 11.7 hours for 556.7 and 560.1 km on 27 September 2026. With lunch, fuel and a few photos, plan on a full daylight day and more, or split it over two days in the Dades valley.

Is there a direct bus from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Yes. Supratours runs one direct coach a day, leaving Marrakech at 08:00 and arriving at 20:30, a 12 hour 30 minute trip. Its booking page didn’t offer that coach as one ticket on the dates I checked; two tickets split at Tinejdad came to 310 dirhams. The return is offered direct at 300.

Can I visit Merzouga as a day trip from Marrakech?

No. The round trip is more than 1,100 km and over 20 hours of routed driving. A day trip would mean driving all night on mountain roads, which Canada’s travel advice says to avoid after dark. The shortest sensible desert trip from Marrakech is three days with one night in the dunes.

Where is the best place to stop between Marrakech and Merzouga?

The Dades valley, at Boumalne. It sits at about 307 of the 554 routed kilometres, so day one is about 5 hours 45 of routed driving and day two about 4 hours 30. Todra, at Tinghir, gives a longer first day and a second of about 3 hours 30.

Is it better to fly to Errachidia?

It’s faster if a flight fits your dates. Ryanair’s fare finder listed Marrakech to Errachidia flights on 22 of 61 days in October and November 2026, one hour long, with base fares from 178 dirhams. Errachidia airport is still 124 km from the dunes, and I found no scheduled bus from the airport, so arrange a transfer.

Where to start

Three decisions. First, do you want daylight when you reach the dunes? If you do, break the road. Second, sleep in the Dades valley, or let a three-day tour do that for you. Third, if you take the coach, book the return from Merzouga and plan the camp pickup for 20:30.

For the tour shapes, what’s included and when to go, start with the Morocco desert tour guide.
