Essaouira, Morocco: The Day Trip in 8 Honest Hours

Last verified: October 20, 2026. On 20 October I read the coach timetable and fares in this guide from Supratours’ own booking system, for two test dates four weeks apart, and the Skala du Port ticket price from the Ministry of Culture’s ticket page. Road and walking times are routed, with no stops. Riad and tour prices are what Booking and Viator showed that day. I re-read all of it every 60 days.

Two times decide the Essaouira day trip: 10:30 and 18:30. The first useful coach from Marrakech gets in at 10:30, and the last one back leaves at 18:30. That’s eight hours in Essaouira, Morocco, for 200 dirhams return, and it’s why I’d skip the tour.

Essaouira, Morocco: the day trip priced and timed, 8 hours in town on the 07:30 coach out and the 18:30 back

My verdict, before the working: from Marrakech, Essaouira works as a day trip on the public coach. You get a full working day in town for about what a shared tour advertises. Stay one night if you want the sunset on the ramparts and a dinner that doesn’t end at a bus station. Stay two only if you want a whole day for the beach or the wind. From Casablanca, don’t try it in a day.

Key Takeaways

  • On Supratours’ own timetable, the 07:30 from Marrakech and the 18:30 back give you 8 hours in Essaouira
  • The coach is 100 dirhams each way, 125 on the premium departures
  • Shared day tours advertise from about the same money, for 8 to 12 hours
  • The Skala du Port is the only state-ticketed sight: 60 dirhams for a foreign adult
  • From Casablanca, a day trip is almost 13 hours of travel for 3 and a half in town

Is Essaouira, Morocco worth a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes, and by coach rather than on a tour. Supratours runs seven coaches a day each way, 3 hours each. Take the 07:30 out and the 18:30 back, both bookable on the operator’s own system on 20 October 2026, and you get 8 hours in town for 200 dirhams return.

Most guides answer this question with a tour. The tour listings are honest about their length: on Viator on 20 October, six shared day trips from Marrakech advertised 8 to 12 hours. The road itself is 181 km, routed at 2 hours 37 minutes each way with no stops. Add a stop each way and the pickups, and a 10-hour tour can’t give you much more than four hours on the ground. The coach gives you twice that.

From Marrakech, the coach gives you a full day Earliest out, last back, same day, on Supratours’ own timetable. Local time. 06:0010:0014:0018:0022:00 From Marrakech8h00 in townFrom Casablanca3h30 Travelling In Essaouira
Supratours timetable (getHoraires) and booking engine (disponibilite), Marrakech, Casablanca Voyageurs and Essaouira, for 27 October 2026, read 20 October 2026. The Casablanca legs are a train to Marrakech plus the coach.

What does the tour cost against that? The six shared listings started at US$12 to US$29 per person, a median of about 216 dirhams at Bank Al-Maghrib‘s September rate. Those are from-prices, before any lunch or extras, and I haven’t read each one’s inclusions. So call the money a draw. The time isn’t close.

I said the same thing, shorter, in my list of things to do in Marrakech: you don’t need a tour for Essaouira. This is the working behind that line. A tour still makes sense if you want a guide, or stops on the road that a coach won’t make. If you just want the town, take the bus.

In short: on Supratours’ timetable for 27 October and 24 November 2026, the first coach from Marrakech reaches Essaouira at 10:30 and the last one back leaves at 18:30. That same-day return gives 8 hours in town for 200 dirhams. A 10-hour shared tour, the middle of the 8 to 12 hours the listings advertise, gives at most about four.

How do you get from Marrakech to Essaouira?

By Supratours coach, seven times a day each way, 3 hours a trip. There’s no train. On 20 October 2026, Supratours’ booking system priced every standard seat at 100 dirhams and the premium departures at 125, on both test dates, a week and five weeks out.

This is what Supratours‘ own timetable and booking system showed on 20 October, for Tuesday 27 October and Tuesday 24 November. The two dates matched except for one return.

The booking system codes the 125-dirham coaches as a different comfort class (6, against 7 for the 100-dirham ones). I’m not going to promise you what that means on board, because I haven’t ridden one. The 100-dirham coach is fine for three hours.

In Marrakech, the coach leaves from the Supratours terminal on Avenue Hassan II, by the ONCF railway station, according to Supratours’ own agency list. In Essaouira it stops at the Supratours agency at Bin Lassouar, a 215-metre walk from Bab Marrakech, about 3 minutes routed on foot.

The fare didn’t move between a date a week out and one five weeks out, which matches the flat coach fares I found in August and wrote up in how coach fares move with booking date. The tickets are flexible too. The booking system says you can change one free up to five times, get a full refund until the day before, and lose 20% if you cancel on the day.

Seats aren’t scarce midweek. On 20 October the system showed 62 to 67 seats left on every standard coach from 15:00 onward, both ways, on both dates. Weekends and holidays may be busier, and I only read Tuesdays, so book the return when you book the outbound.

CTM runs this road too. I didn’t read its times or fares for this guide, so I’m not printing any. The other road option is a grand taxi, a shared car that leaves when it’s full, and how grand taxis price a seat explains what to expect. For how the whole coach network fits together, see the rest of the coach network.

A day in Essaouira, hour by hour

Eight hours is enough for everything ticketed and free in the medina, with time to sit down. The coach stop is 215 metres from Bab Marrakech and the Skala du Port is about 12 minutes’ walk from the stop, so nothing in this plan needs a taxi.

This is how I’d spend it.

  1. 07:30, Marrakech. Be at the Supratours terminal by 07:15 with your ticket.
  2. 10:30, Bab Marrakech. Walk in through the gate and keep going west, towards the sea.
  3. 11:00, the souks and Place Moulay Hassan. Shop while you’re fresh, then walk out to the square by the harbour. It’s about a 9-minute walk from the coach stop.
  4. 12:30, the fishing port. One guide I read points to the fish grills by the port for lunch. I didn’t collect their prices for this guide, so agree the price before anything goes on the grill.
  5. 14:00, the Skala du Port. The one sight with a ticket, 60 dirhams. Go up for the view back over the walls.
  6. 15:00, the Skala de la Ville. The sea ramparts on the medina side, above the Atlantic.
  7. 16:30, the beach. South of the port, a long strand open to the wind.
  8. 18:00, back at Bab Marrakech for the 18:30. It’s 3 minutes from the gate to the stop.

One thing the plan can’t give you is the sunset. Morocco has been on GMT permanently since 20 September 2026, and by my calculation for Essaouira’s coordinates the sun sets around 17:56 on 27 October and 17:38 on 24 November. So from late October to mid-January, when it still sets around 17:57, you can watch it from the ramparts and still make the 18:30. In mid-July it sets around 19:46, over an hour after your coach has gone.

What does Essaouira cost, and what’s free?

Very little, because the Skala du Port is the only sight on the state’s ticket platform. It costs 60 dirhams for a foreign adult on the Ministry of Culture’s own ticket page, read on 20 October 2026. The medina, the souks and the beach are free.

That 60 is worth stating, because a guide I found published in at least six languages gives “30 to 60” and tells you to check on site. Thirty is what Moroccans and residents pay. The same guide puts the coach at 130 to 150 dirhams, when the operator’s own system says 100. The Ministry’s page is the operator’s own, so I treat it as the price.

The priced list:

  • The Skala du Port: 60 dirhams. Two fortified wings, each 200 metres long, meeting at a right angle above the harbour, according to the Ministry’s page. A child aged 7 to 13 pays 30, and Moroccans get in free on Fridays. The page doesn’t give opening hours for this site that I’d trust, so go before mid-afternoon.
  • The Skala de la Ville: no ticket on the Ministry’s platform. The rampart walk along the medina’s sea wall. One guide says parts of it now charge admission, which I couldn’t confirm, so carry some small change.
  • The medina and the souks: free. The medina has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001, as the Medina of Essaouira (formerly Mogador).
  • The beach: free.
  • The Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah museum: no price printed. In April 2026, an agreement to fit out and run it was signed in Rabat, Médias24 reported. I couldn’t confirm whether it’s open, so ask at your riad.

Shopping is where the money goes. If you want fixed prices for crafts, the state-run Ensemble d’Artisanat sits at Bab Marrakech, the same gate your coach stops by, and I listed it among the fixed-price craft centres.

Supratours booking engine (fares), the Ministry of Culture’s Khadamat Culture platform (Skala du Port) and Viator search results (six shared tours, US$12 to 29), all read 20 October 2026; 1 USD = 9.5965 MAD (Bank Al-Maghrib, 25 September 2026). Beds are left out of the chart; the riad round is in the text.

What does a bed cost if you stay? On 20 October, Booking showed 41 riads with a room for two on Tuesday 27 October. The 21 on page one had a median of 826 dirhams for the night, taxes in, from 384 to 4,170. For Tuesday 24 November it showed 60, and the median of the 20 on page one was 909. These are advertised prices, not what anyone paid.

Should you stay the night in Essaouira?

Stay if you want the evening, not the sights. One night on the same coaches gives you 32 hours in town, from the 10:30 arrival to the 18:30 the next day. I count a full day as one that starts and ends in the same bed, so one night is still zero full days and two nights give you one.

Supratours timetable and booking engine, read 20 October 2026 for 27 October and 24 November 2026. Nights counted from the 10:30 arrival to the 18:30 departure.

The day trip already covers every sight. What a night buys is different: the ramparts at dusk in any season, a dinner without one eye on the clock, the port in the morning, and the 11:00 or 14:00 back with no rush.

The second night is for a whole day of something else: a day on the beach, a kitesurfing lesson, or simply doing nothing in a town that stays mild. A third night is a holiday, not a stop.

Every extra bed costs the rest of your trip a day, and Essaouira sits off the line between Morocco’s other main stops, so it usually costs you a return leg to Marrakech too. For what that does to a one or two-week plan, see what the extra bed costs the whole trip, which already counts the Essaouira detour in its ledger.

Can you visit Essaouira from Casablanca or Agadir?

From Casablanca, only with a night. Supratours sells the trip as an ONCF train to Marrakech plus the coach: 245 to 270 dirhams and 5 hours 49 minutes to 6 hours 54 minutes each way. A same-day return leaves 3 hours 30 minutes in town for 12 hours 43 minutes of travel.

The earliest Casablanca departure, 06:36 from Casa Voyageurs, arrives at 13:30. The last one back leaves Essaouira at 17:00 and gets you into Casablanca at 22:49. That’s 515 dirhams and almost 13 hours of travel for an afternoon. Even driving doesn’t fix it: the road is 361 km, routed at 4 hours 37 minutes each way with no stops. Stay a night or skip it.

From Agadir, Supratours’ timetable returned no route to Essaouira on 20 October. The road is 175 km, routed at 2 hours 52 minutes with no stops, so a day trip by car is possible. I didn’t read CTM’s times for this road, so plan that leg yourself.

Essaouira also has its own airport, Essaouira-Mogador. I haven’t checked this year’s schedules with the airlines, so I won’t list its routes. For most trips you’ll fly into Marrakech, and which airport to fly into covers the choice.

When is the best time to go to Essaouira?

Any month, and especially when Marrakech is hot. In July, Essaouira’s average daily high is 21.9°C and its average low 17.7°C, on NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals. In January it’s 18.4°C by day and 11.1°C at night. The daytime high moves only 3.5°C between January and July.

Essaouira is where people go to get out of a Marrakech summer. The rain comes in winter: NOAA’s normals give 4.6 days of rain in January and none to speak of in July. The wind brings the kitesurfers, and you’ll want a layer at dinner, even in July.

One weekend to plan around is the Gnaoua and World Music Festival. Its 27th edition ran from 25 to 27 June 2026, Hespress reported. If next year’s festival falls in your dates, book the coach and the bed early, or go a week later. For the rest of the year month by month, see every month ranked.

Where does Essaouira, Morocco fit on your route?

As a day or a night out of Marrakech. It’s on the coast, 181 km west of Marrakech and off the line between the other big stops, so it doesn’t sit between two of them the way Chefchaouen sits between Fes and Tangier. Treat it as a round trip from Marrakech and the plan stays simple.

On my ten-day route, Essaouira is the named variant: drop the last days in the north and finish on the coast instead. That’s covered in the ten-day route’s coast variant. On a shorter trip, the cleanest shape is Marrakech, a coach day to Essaouira, and back.

It’s a small place to base yourself. Essaouira province had 425,375 residents in the 2024 census, according to Morocco’s statistics office, the HCP, and 310,853 of them lived in rural areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Essaouira worth a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes, by coach. On Supratours’ timetable read on 20 October 2026, the 07:30 from Marrakech arrives at 10:30 and the last coach back leaves at 18:30, which gives you 8 hours in town for 200 dirhams return. A 10-hour shared tour, the middle of the 8 to 12 hours the listings advertise, leaves about half that.

How long is the bus from Marrakech to Essaouira?

Three hours. Supratours runs seven coaches a day each way. They leave Marrakech at 07:30, 09:00, 10:30, 12:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 19:00, and Essaouira at 07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:30, 17:00 and 18:30, on its timetable for late October 2026.

How much is the bus from Marrakech to Essaouira?

100 dirhams each way on a standard Supratours coach, and 125 on the premium departures, on the operator’s booking system on 20 October 2026. The fare was the same a week out and five weeks out. Tickets can be changed free up to five times, and refunded in full until the day before.

How much is the Skala du Port in Essaouira?

60 dirhams for a foreign adult and 30 for a child aged 7 to 13, on the Ministry of Culture’s own ticket page, read on 20 October 2026. Moroccans and residents pay 30. It’s the only state-ticketed sight in town; the medina and the beach are free.

How many days do you need in Essaouira?

None for the sights, which fit into the 8 hours a coach day trip gives you. Stay one night, 32 hours in town on the same coaches, for the evening and the morning port. Stay two nights for a full day on the beach or the water.

Where to start

Take the 07:30 coach from Marrakech to Essaouira, Morocco, and the 18:30 back. Budget 200 dirhams for the coach and 60 for the Skala du Port, and add a night only if you want the evening. Then fit it into the rest of the plan.

What I didn’t measure: these are timetables and published prices read on one day, not tickets I rode or gates I paid at. CTM’s times and fares aren’t here. The tour prices are advertised from-prices, and the riad prices are what Booking advertised, not what anyone paid. I’ll re-read all of it in December.
